Maggie Harvey has been working in the field of communications for nearly 30 years. As an independent communications and public relations consultant, her clients have included:
For five years, she was with Equine Canada, the governing body for equestrian sport in Canada and the national ‘voice of the horse’, representing horse owners in matters of industry, health and welfare, and recreation. She initially joined the organization to develop programs and services to support recreational horse enthusiasts across the country and to provide strategic support to both the Industry and Health and Welfare divisions through government relations and stakeholder communications. A promotion to a newly-created position saw the portfolio grow to include multi-sport marketing, sponsorships and relations with international, national and provincial sport organizations.
For 10 years, Maggie held the position of Manager of Communications and Information Services for the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, the seventh largest school board in Ontario, She built and oversaw a full-service corporate communications secretariat for the District, providing crisis communications and public affairs management, as well as strategic communications and marketing programs. Her team also supported the Education Foundation of Ottawa, the Ottawa-Carleton Education Network and the District’s annual United Way Campaign.
Maggie designed and delivered strategic media relations workshops to trustees, superintendents, managers and principals, including those enrolled in the Ontario Supervisory Officers’ Qualification Program. As well, she wrote speeches for senior leadership, annual reports, press releases, marketing materials and video scripts.
As Director of Media Relations for the War Amps of Canada, Maggie developed strategic communication and marketing plans which incorporated direct mail campaigns, news releases, news features, biographies and national news conferences, and special events to complement national fund-raising activities and programs. She travelled across Canada promoting the association and its programs for child amputees and war veterans. Highlights of her tenure included, working in tandem with the CEO, the successful lobbying of compensation for Canada’s Thalidomide victims and working on the award-winning CBC documentary, Broken Promises. Other groups she represented included Canadian soldiers interned in Japanese prisoner of war camps during WWW II; disabled war veterans seeking better pension benefits; and The War Amps Child Amputee Ski team at the 1986 Winter Olympics in Alberta.
